Mobile medical units
A mobile medical unit is a medical office on wheels, and a healthcare facility first. It has to pass a health-department inspection, protect a six-figure equipment package from road vibration, keep a patient comfortable in July and January, and still be in service seven years from now. High Level Enterprises builds mobile medical units for hospital systems, FQHCs, county health departments, nonprofits and employer health programs at our facility in Wakarusa, Indiana, and delivers them nationwide.

What drives the price
Not a tier. A size, a use and the equipment.
HLE does not build a cheap mobile clinic and a good one. It builds a one-room clinic and a multi-room clinic, on a van, a cutaway, a medium-duty truck or a trailer, with the equipment you bring or the equipment HLE supplies. Four things move the number; everything else is detail.
The platform and the equipment package drive the number more than the size of the box.
The proposal itemizes each driver, so you can see what moves your number.
Mobile medical units
Typical range for recent HLE units, from the lowest sold to the highest quoted. Larger or more heavily equipped units run above it; your number comes with the proposal.
| Driver | Choices | Moves the range by |
|---|---|---|
| Platform and length | Ford Transit, Ram ProMaster or Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van · Ford E-350 / E-450, Chevrolet 4500 / 5500HD or Ford F-450 / F-550 cutaway · Ford F-650, Freightliner S2C, International MV607 or Ford F-53 / F-59 medium-duty · HLE-built 20' to 38' bumper-pull or gooseneck trailer | sets the base |
| Exam rooms and stations | One exam room on a van, one or two on a cutaway, multi-room clinics on medium-duty; waiting and reception, provider workstation, restroom with holding tanks | per room |
| Major equipment | Clinical sinks with hot water, medical-grade cabinetry, medical refrigeration, medical gas where required, lead lining for imaging, telehealth connectivity. HLE-supplied or customer-furnished; customer-furnished equipment is itemized separately. | itemized |
| Access and power | ADA wheelchair lift or ramp · generator sized for the real equipment load · shore power · battery backup for refrigeration and IT · HVAC sized for the climate | itemized |
Most mobile clinic projects: 3 to 6 months after the signed order, deposit and chassis; multi-room and imaging units land toward the top of the range. A typical build does not run past 6 months; a rush build has gone from purchase order to finished unit in about 80 days (rush builds).

- Health systems and FQHCs extending primary care, screening and follow-up into rural and underserved communities. They need exam rooms that meet clinical standards, an ADA lift or ramp, and a unit their facilities team can maintain.
- County and state health departments running vaccination, testing and public-health outreach. They need fast turnaround, simple systems, and a layout that handles volume.
- Nonprofits and grant-funded programs (HRSA, CMS Rural Health Transformation, state programs). They need a grant-ready specification and a builder who has produced one before. See grant programs that fund mobile units and the Rural Health Transformation page.
- Employer and workforce health programs bringing screening and occupational health to job sites.
- Behavioral health and addiction programs — covered on the mobile drug and addiction treatment page.

Platforms
HLE builds mobile medical units on the platform the mission calls for:
- Vans — Ford Transit (standard and high roof), Ram ProMaster, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. One exam room, single-provider outreach, easiest to drive and park.
- Cutaway chassis — Ford E-350 / E-450, Chevrolet 4500 / 5500HD, Ford F-450 / F-550. The workhorse of the category: one or two exam rooms, lift, restroom, generator. No CDL required on most configurations.
- Medium-duty chassis — Ford F-650, Freightliner S2C, International MV607, Ford F-53 / F-59 step-van chassis. Multi-room clinics, imaging, heavier equipment packages.
- Trailers — HLE-built 20’ to 38’ bumper-pull and gooseneck trailers. Maximum floor space per dollar, towed by a fleet pickup, parked for a day or a season.
What goes into an HLE mobile medical unit
Clinical layout. Exam rooms with clinical sinks and hot water, waiting and reception area, provider workstation, secure medication and supply storage, restroom with holding tanks. Every layout starts from how your team will actually see patients — intake, exam, checkout — and is drawn by HLE engineering before anything is built.
Medical systems. Medical-grade cabinetry and seamless surfaces, medical refrigeration, medical gas where required, lead lining for imaging, telehealth connectivity, exterior awning and lighting for outdoor intake.
Power and climate. Onboard generator sized for the real equipment load, shore-power connection, battery backup for refrigeration and IT, HVAC sized for the unit and the climate it works in. See power systems for mobile units.
Accessibility. ADA wheelchair lift or ramp, compliant door widths and turning space, ADA restroom where the floor plan allows. See ADA accessibility in mobile medical units.
How this unit is built
The construction column for a mobile clinic
What HLE does, and what to ask any builder before you compare quotes. The full column is on How we build it.
What HLE builds
One-piece pressure-laminated sidewalls with no horizontal seam. Windows cut from the panel.
What to check on any proposal
How many pieces is the sidewall, and where do the seams fall? Every seam is a future leak.
What HLE builds
Resin-infused composite subfloor over the cage; it sheds water instead of absorbing it. Seamless medical-grade sheet vinyl coved up the wall where the use calls for it.
What to check on any proposal
What is under the vinyl? A plywood subfloor goes soft after one winter of mopping.
What HLE builds
Solid hardwood cabinetry with stainless hardware. PerformMAX 500 resin-infused panel in wet areas, not plywood, with sealed edges. No particleboard anywhere a sink, a fridge or a mop can reach.
What to check on any proposal
Ask for the substrate by name. "Cabinets" on a spec sheet can mean particleboard that swells and fails in two to four years.
What HLE builds
Harnesses built in HLE's own shop with marine-grade connectors, every circuit labeled at both ends, a panel drawing delivered with the unit.
What to check on any proposal
Ask for the panel drawing before delivery. If they cannot produce one, the next technician cannot either.
From the people who run the units
In their words.
HLE stands by their word on warranties, repairs and customer service. They are also very helpful with questions about your unit.
My company has 12 mobile medication units that were built by HLE. Very importantly they do the custom builds onsite start to finish. They have always been responsive to any repair needs for our units.
The team works with you to find the best way to take care of any issue. Our units are specifically unique in their design and functionality since we treat addiction patients. They worked with us to make sure all the functions inside and out had the needed safety features for staff members and patients.
I would strongly recommend HLE for your custom needs to your RV or RV conversion units.

Acadia Healthcare – CTC Division
I have worked with HLE over several years. HLE has successfully completed 13 large sized, customized healthcare mobile units for me. They were great to work with throughout the entire process.
I found HLE to have very competitive pricing for their custom builds which were built to high quality specifications. The build times were also significantly faster than all of the other companies I had bid on our units. HLE was also able to successfully beat all of the project timelines on all units which was an impressive feat as 12 of the units were built in batches of 6 units.
The team HLE has employed is also very impressive as they have very skilled and knowledgeable designers/engineers, electrical engineers, and other great tradespeople who were always pleasant to work with.

Common questions
What program directors ask first
Do you build mobile medical trailers?
Yes. HLE builds medical units on bumper-pull and gooseneck trailers as well as on vans, cutaways and medium-duty chassis. Delivered trailer units are shown on this page.
How much does a mobile medical unit cost?
Recent HLE mobile clinic projects: $130,000 – $400,000. Cutaway units with two exam rooms, a lift, restroom and generator commonly fall in the middle of the range. The platform and the equipment drive the number more than the size of the box. Your number comes with the proposal.
How long does it take to build one?
Most units are delivered 3 to 6 months after the signed order, deposit and chassis; a typical build does not run past 6 months, and a rush build has gone from purchase order to finished unit in about 80 days. Units waiting on long-lead medical equipment run on the equipment date. Chassis availability is the other variable, and HLE keeps chassis inventory on hand to shorten it.
Do I need a CDL to drive a mobile medical unit?
Not for most van and cutaway builds. A CDL is required when the vehicle’s GVWR exceeds 26,001 lbs, which applies to some medium-duty chassis. We will tell you where your configuration lands before you commit to a chassis.
Can the unit be funded with grants?
Yes. HRSA, CMS Rural Health Transformation, state health department and foundation programs all fund mobile medical units. HLE can supply a specification and quote in the format grant applications require. See grant programs that fund mobile units.
Does HLE build to ADA requirements?
Yes. Lifts or ramps, door widths, restroom clearances and interior turning space are designed in from the first drawing when a unit is publicly funded or serves the general public.
Can HLE match a floor plan we already have?
Yes. Send it. Many customers start from a plan in our library and change room sizes, equipment and finishes from there.
Where is HLE, and do you deliver nationwide?
High Level Enterprises is in Wakarusa, Indiana, in Elkhart County. We deliver across the United States and provide an orientation on the unit’s systems at handover.
